Bandhani - An Ageless Craft !!

We've written a lot about different weaving techniques that are unique to the Indian subcontinent. But the art of dyeing doesn't always get the level of recognition that it deserves. India is home to so many different types of dyeing, one more creative and artistic than the other. We wish to talk about the craft of Bandhini in this blog.

Birth of Bandhani :

The word Bandhani is derived from athe Sanskrit word 'bandh 'which means to bind. It is a tie and dye technique, where the cloth is tightly tied to resist color in some parts and then dyed to form beautiful patterns and different hues. While it was initially developed in Rajasthan, this technique of dyeing has been widely used in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

The vibrant colours, dramatic swirls and twirls, and the remarkable colour combinations gives it an ethereal quality.

Colours of Bandhani :

Bandhani is known for its bright and brilliant hues creating different patterns and combinations. The colours are usually made from natural extract and each colour has its own significance.

Red signifies good fortune and is usually worn by the bride. Yellow is considered a colour of joy and celebration. Black, while considered to be a colour of mourning in the past, has assumed new meaning as a fashionable colour today. In the last few decades, more importance is being paid to what colour is loved and looks good on an individual than the meaning behind it. The market today has a wider range of patterns and colours.

Patterns of Bandhani :

Curating a distinct pattern in Bandhani is a highly sophisticated and laborious technique. The artisans have to be extremely skilled and precise. There are a few widely recognized patterns;

Ekdali - single dot, Tikunthi - triple dot, Chaubundi - four dots, Kodi - tear shaped pattern, Shikargah- mountain pattern, Jaaldar - web pattern, Beldaar - vine pattern, Laddu jalebi - swirl pattern, Leheriya - wave pattern.

Each pattern has a story and significance attached.

We have curated Bandhani saris in traditional and contemporary patterns and colours. Each Bandhani sari is a work of art and is meant to make you feel special!
