Silk sarees have constantly evolved in order to keep up with tastes. Twenty years ago, a freshly woven Kanjivaram silk saree could weigh as much as 1.5 kilograms. But today, lightness and softness of texture are preferred. Soft silk sarees, woven in the town of Coimbatore, are made specifically to be as light and as soft as possible.
The enviable texture:
Soft silk sarees are known for their incredibly soft texture and sheen. Weaving is a process that requires interlocking of warp (longitudinal) and weft (horizontal) threads. A little bit of starch is almost always necessary in order to weave a saree. But the master weavers of Coimbatore have adapted a unique technique where they use fresh water and little to no starch for the weaving process. This gives the saree the softness and unique texture. An average soft silk saree, even one with grand designs, weighs less than 600 grams. This is because of the
The yarn :
Another unique feature of soft silk sarees is the use of Chinese silk for the warp and Indian mulberry silk for the weft. Chinese silk is known for its fineness while Indian silk is known for imparting a great texture to the saree. As a result, soft silk sarees possess both of these features.
The weave :
Weaves in and around the town of Coimbatore have adopted a weaving style that finds its origins in the silk town of Kanjivaram. One important difference, however, is that Coimbatore weavers often use a semi-automatic shuttle system operated by rope while Kanjivaram weavers operate the weaving shuttle entirely by hand. This makes the sarees a bit faster to weave and hence Coimbatore soft silk sarees are more affordable than Kanjivaram silk sarees.
At Parisera, our aim is to promote regional weaves and the town of Coimbatore along with areas around it are extremely critical to the handloom sector.
